Everyone needs a Joe

A couple of years ago, our family friend Joe generously offered to mentor my son on bass guitar. Not only did he share his time and talent, but he also gifted a high-quality vintage bass and amp to support my son’s musical journey. That kind of generosity? It’s rare. Having Joe as a mentor made a world of difference for us—and it made me realize: everyone needs a “Joe.”

But not every family has one. The reality is that quality instruments and lessons are becoming harder to access for many kids. That’s why I wanted to pay it forward by creating Instrumental—an organization dedicated to giving budding teen musicians the instruments, mentorship, and opportunities they need to grow. It’s amazing how just one dedicated person—or one instrument—can change a life.

I’m inviting fellow music lovers to join me in being instrumental. Whether you donate a gently used instrument, contribute funds to help cover lessons or workshops, or simply spread the word—your support helps spark confidence, connection, and creativity in the next generation.

Together, we can ensure that all young musicians have the chance to develop their talent—and a lifelong love of music.
